Press Release
Washington, DC — Today, Republican lawmakers on the Senate HELP Committee released a bogus “report” on mifepristone in their latest attempt to spread anti-abortion propaganda. Senators Susan Collins and Jon Husted sit on that committee and will face voters in tight races this November. Mifepristone has been FDA-approved and safely used by more than 7.5 million people over the past 25 years – medication abortion now accounts for more than half of all abortions nationwide.
This baseless report builds on a long line of Republican efforts to sow distrust in the safety and efficacy of the medication, and cements a clear pattern of scientific evidence being disregarded in favor of extreme ideology. Just last week, Trump nominated Heidi Overton to serve as FDA commissioner, who has called abortion “corrosive” and called for medically unnecessary restrictions to medication abortion. The FDA is also continuing its sham “review” of mifepristone, and there are several pending federal cases winding their ways through the courts to impose unnecessary restrictions on mifepristone. Newly-confirmed Attorney General Todd Blanche has vowed to work across the Trump administration to find ways to cut off access to mifepristone nationwide.
Earlier this week, Senator Patty Murray, former chair of the HELP Committee, led 28 of her colleagues in demanding answers from HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. about the Trump administration’s attacks on reproductive health care. GOP attacks on mifepristone are coordinated, and their ultimate mission is aligned: banning abortion nationwide.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“Republicans are relentless in their efforts to ban abortion nationwide. We will not stand for it. No bogus report can change the facts—mifepristone is safe. Republicans have the majority and this is what they are doing with it, while families watch their health care costs climb.”
For over 55 years, Reproductive Freedom for All (formerly NARAL Pro-Choice America) has fought to protect and advance reproductive freedom at the federal and state levels—including access to abortion care, birth control, pregnancy and post-partum care, and paid family leave—for everybody. Reproductive Freedom for All is powered by its more than 4.5 million members from every state and congressional district in the country, representing the 8 in 10 Americans who support legal abortion.
