Reproductive Freedom for All Sounds the Alarm on the Anti-Abortion Record of Nicole Saphier Following Today’s HELP Confirmation Hearing
Washington, DC — Today, the anti-abortion extremism of Nicole Saphier, Donald Trump’s nominee for U.S. Surgeon General, was on full display during her confirmation hearing before the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee.
When pressed by Sen. Patty Murray on whether she would work to address the dangerous consequences of abortion bans—especially in light of new data that ectopic pregnancy deaths have doubled—Saphier cited the FDA’s ongoing sham “review” of mifepristone, and said that it has her full support. She also repeated false claims about mifepristone despite overwhelming evidence that the medication is safe and effective.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“Nicole Saphier is just the latest in a long line of administration nominees that disregard science in favor of a fringe anti-abortion ideology. Saphier cannot be trusted to serve as the nation’s leading medical authority, and any Senator who votes to confirm her must be held accountable for backing this extremism.”
Saphier has consistently parroted disinformation and baseless claims about reproductive healthcare, including abortion. She has publicly criticized the Food and Drug Administration’s evidence-based decisions to expand mifepristone access—echoing arguments advanced by anti-abortion extremists rather than the scientific record. She has also promoted so-called “fetal personhood” ideology, which prioritizes the rights of fetuses over pregnant people and threatens to criminalize patients seeking abortion care. It’s no surprise the extremist National Right to Life Committee called Saphier “an excellent choice” for this position.
The Surgeon General is the nation’s leading medical authority. Saphier’s record makes clear that she cannot be trusted to put the wellbeing of Americans over Trump’s anti-science, anti-abortion agenda.
For over 55 years, Reproductive Freedom for All (formerly NARAL Pro-Choice America) has fought to protect and advance reproductive freedom at the federal and state levels—including access to abortion care, birth control, pregnancy and post-partum care, and paid family leave—for everybody. Reproductive Freedom for All is powered by its more than 4.5 million members from every state and congressional district in the country, representing the 8 in 10 Americans who support legal abortion.
