PHOENIX, AZ — Today, Arizona health care advocates joined Protect Our Care Arizona to discuss the ongoing Trump-GOP Health Care Emergency and Rep. Schweikert’s recent dismissal of any concerns as “whining and bedwetting”.
The fallout from Donald Trump and Republicans’ big, ugly bill is happening now, causing severe damage to health care as we know it – all to give tax breaks to billionaires and major corporations. For years, Republicans have been trying to slash Medicaid and dismantle the Affordable Care Act (ACA) — and last month, they finally succeeded, pushing through their big, ugly bill making the largest cuts to health care in American history and raising costs for millions of working families across the country.
In Arizona, Donald Trump, Rep. Schweikert, and their Republican allies are putting access to care at risk for hundreds of thousands of Arizonans, 5 hospitals and 7 Arizona nursing homes at risk of closure along with thousands of jobs lost, skyrocketing premium costs and wait times for those who have coverage within reach. This is the GOP war on health care in action, and it means higher costs and worse care for millions of American families. The consequences of this bill will be felt for years to come, and we are already seeing the impacts play out across the country. Speakers discussed the big, ugly bill’s ongoing impact on Arizona families, and held Rep. Schweikert accountable for his cruel dismissal of Arizonans’ grave concerns around the decision to slash health care access to give tax breaks to billionaires.
“No matter your political persuasion, it is wrong when a Member of Congress dismisses the legitimate concerns of thousands of Arizonans who will be impacted by Medicaid cuts and describes their fears as ‘whining’ and ‘bedwetting,’ said Athena Salman, Arizona Director, Reproductive Freedom for All. “David Schweikert slept through a critical vote on the bill, and now he is mocking people who rely on these services to deflect from the fact that he failed to show up. We are here to remind him that he answers to us, and he needs to wake up and fight for the people of Arizona, not the rich and the powerful.”
