Georgia Lobby Day: Fighting for Reproductive Freedom at the Capitol

Now more than ever, we need to demonstrate the power of the reproductive freedom movement in Georgia.

Reproductive Freedom for All Georgia state campaigns director Alicia S. advocating for reproductive rights.

With the 2025 legislative session in full swing, state lawmakers are already introducing bills to undermine abortion access and attack reproductive freedom. But our community is showing up to make sure they hear directly from the people they represent.

Georgia Lobby Day: Fighting for Reproductive Freedom at the Capitol

On Lobby Day organizers and advocates from across Georgia came together to meet with lawmakers and push back against extremist policies.

The day began with a Capitol tour and meetings with supportive legislators, including Senator Jason Esteves. Meanwhile, Chair Tanya Miller and Representative Park Cannon—both staunch reproductive freedom champions—remained on the House floor to oppose harmful legislation.

A Press Conference for Reproductive Freedom

A powerful press conference followed, joined by Representative Robert Flournoy, and featuring remarks from Representative Shea Roberts, Senate Minority Leader Harold Jones, and Alicia Stallworth, Director of Georgia Campaigns at Reproductive Freedom for All. Each speaker brought the same resounding message: the fight for reproductive freedom is urgent, and we won’t back down.

Additionally, Planned Parenthood Southeast Advocates joined us to expose the growing crisis of reproductive care in the state and demand urgent legislative action.

Shanette Williams courageously shared the story of her daughter, Amber Nicole Thurman.

Shanette Williams Shares Amber’s Story

Finally, Shanette Williams courageously shared her daughter’s story. Amber Nicole Thurman was a 28-year-old mother who tragically died after she couldn’t access legal abortion care in Georgia. The state’s maternal mortality review committee found that Amber’s death was preventable and said a delay in care had a “large” impact.

Her case was among the first documented deaths caused by delayed or denied abortion care due to Georgia’s abortion ban. Alarmingly, state officials dismissed all members of Georgia’s Maternal Mortality Committee shortly following ProPublica’s reporting on Amber’s story (and now state officials won’t say who the new members are).

This is unacceptable. But together, we’re making our voices heard to demand change.

People Power with Partner Organizations

Reproductive Freedom for All partner with other advocacy organizations to advocate for reproductive freedom.

Recently we partnered with key organizations for lobby days and to hold state legislators accountable.

Here’s a few things we’ve been up to:

  • 9to5 Paid Family Leave Lobby Day to advocate for family paid leave, Medicaid expansion, and paid family leave.
  • SPARK Reproductive Justice Lobby Day introduced bills to fight against fake pregnancy clinics that mislead people with advertising and misinformation.
  • The Georgia Legislative Black Caucus Heritage Dinner to celebrate Black excellence during Black History Month.
  • The Feminist Women’s Health Center Lobby Day to urge lawmakers to co-sponsor the Reproductive Freedom Act.
  • SPARK Fertility Justice Now Lobby Day to advocate for fertility care coverage under Georgia’s health insurance policies and Medicaid.

Fighting for Reproductive Rights in Georgia: The Next Chapter

Last year, Georgia voters prevented a Republican supermajority in the State House of Representatives—a critical win and no small feat! We are moving toward making Georgia a state where reproductive rights are protected for everyone.

Still, Georgians are suffering a real and horrifying health crisis due to restrictive abortion bans, forced to navigate dangerous restrictions that endanger their lives and well-being.

Our members remain committed to ensuring access to abortion, birth control, and paid family leave. The work continues, and we invite you to get involved in shaping Georgia’s future.
