So-Called “Personhood” Bills Surge in the States—Let’s Talk About It
"Personhood" Bills are Just Another GOP Tactic to Ban Abortion Nationwide
Anti-abortion extremists are back at it—this time pushing so-called “personhood” bills in state legislatures across the country.
Their goal? Expand the definition of “person” to include embryos and fetuses based on blatant disinformation and stigma. These bills aren’t just dangerous, they’re deliberate.
🛩️ The Big Picture
If passed, they could criminalize miscarriage, threaten IVF and birth control, and open the door to nationwide abortion bans under the GOP’s Project 2025 roadmap. Black women, people of color, and other marginalized communities are most at risk, disproportionately targeted for pregnancy outcomes like miscarriage or stillbirth.
This isn’t new—but it is escalating. The anti-abortion movement has always used disinformation and stigma to push their agenda. With Trump’s playbook and a stacked Supreme Court, they’re feeling bold enough to go all-in.
Emboldened by Trump and his allies’ blatant attacks on reproductive freedom, Republican anti-abortion extremists have introduced personhood bills in at least 10 states this session (Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Missouri, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, and Texas)—all of which already have extreme abortion bans on the books.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO, Mini Timmaraju caught up with The Cut’s Andrea González-Ramírez to talk about the impact of these dangerous bills.
“For decades, the anti-abortion movement’s main legal strategy has been to manufacture increasingly outlandish attacks on reproductive rights until one sticks in the courts,” she says. “Now, the door is wide open for those emboldened by the Trump administration’s agenda to aggressively try to redefine personhood.”
