ICYMI: Mini Timmaraju Joins Ali Vitali to Discuss How Heidi Overton and Todd Blanche Are Shaping Abortion Ahead of the Midterms
Today, Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju joined Way Too Early with Ali Vitali to discuss two Trump administration picks who are set to play key roles in shaping access to abortion care nationwide: Food and Drug Administration Commissioner nominee Heidi Overton and Attorney General Todd Blanche.
Overton, who was nominated just this week, has called abortion “corrosive” and falsely described abortion pills as “dangerous to women” while applauding Dobbs as a “huge victory.” Her nomination is not a coincidence as the FDA continues to fast track its politically motivated, sham “study” of mifepristone to appease anti-abortion leaders who are pushing the agency to restrict access to the medication nationwide. A federal judge has ordered the FDA to provide an update on that sham review by October 7th. The nomination also comes as the Fifth Circuit will hear oral arguments in Louisiana v. FDA — a case aiming to impose medically unnecessary restrictions on medication abortion nationwide — on September 9th.
It’s not just the FDA that’s working overtime to undermine reproductive freedom. Newly minted AG Blanche recently pledged that the Justice Department is “working hand in hand” with federal agencies and the White House “so that the Dobbs decision becomes permanent in every single state.” This comes as Reproductive Freedom for All launched a new ad in Michigan this morning hitting Republicans’ support for Blanche’s confirmation. Timmaraju discussed how this confirmation, taken with Overton’s nomination, shows that the GOP never intended to leave abortion up to the states.

Attacks on abortion access are wildly out of step with the 8 in 10 Americans who support access to legal abortion care. Voters have consistently turned out for abortion access since Roe v. Wade was overturned in 2022, and new polling from Impact Research reaffirms the issue will remain salient in the midterms. Nearly half of likely voters in battleground states say a candidate’s support for a national abortion ban is a dealbreaker, while eight in ten said that it is important that lawmakers protect access to reproductive healthcare.
As Trump’s extreme cabinet and agency picks work in lockstep to push a nationwide ban on abortion care, voters are mobilizing to elect pro-reproductive freedom leaders who will keep the Trump administration and its allies in check.
For over 55 years, Reproductive Freedom for All (formerly NARAL Pro-Choice America) has fought to protect and advance reproductive freedom at the federal and state levels—including access to abortion care, birth control, pregnancy and post-partum care, and paid family leave—for everybody. Reproductive Freedom for All is powered by its more than 4.5 million members from every state and congressional district in the country, representing the 8 in 10 Americans who support legal abortion.
