Days After the Midterms, Democrats Are Committing to Bold Action on Reproductive Freedom Across the Country

Washington, DC — Following sweeping victories for pro-reproductive freedom candidates in Tuesday night’s elections, newly elected Democratic leaders aren’t wasting a moment to protect reproductive freedom. That includes states like Texas and Georgia, which have been under GOP control for decades and are home to some of the most extreme abortion restrictions in the country. Their commitments include expanding protections for abortion access, addressing Georgia’s six-week abortion ban, and ending the Texas attorney general’s pursuit of out-of-state abortion providers.

Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:

“Voters broke Republican gridlock and delivered a clear mandate to protect reproductive freedom—even in states where anti-abortion extremists have held power for decades. Our champions are already showing they’re ready to turn that mandate into action, and we’re ready to help them deliver.”

Democratic leaders are prioritizing reproductive freedom across the country:

  • Georgia: Governor-elect Keisha Lance Bottoms, who made history as the first Black woman to be elected as governor, said she will work closely with Georgia House and Senate leaders to address Georgia’s 6-week abortion ban once she is in office.
  • Texas: Attorney General-elect Nathan Johnson has promised that he will not advance Ken Paxton’s ongoing cases against out-of-state providers who provide medication abortion care to Texans.
  • Pennsylvania: Governor Josh Shapiro plans to prioritize abortion in the first 100 legislative days of the state’s first Democratic trifecta in over 30 years.
  • Wisconsin: Governor-elect David Crowley cited enshrining abortion access in the state constitution as a top priority in the final stretch of his campaign.
  • Illinois: Governor JB Pritzker is pressing for immediate federal action. Following his reelection, Pritzker released a “Day One Agenda” calling on Congress to restore reproductive health protections stripped away by Dobbs and protect interstate travel for care.
  • Massachusetts: Governor Maura Healey took emergency action today to ensure the Prioritizing Patient Access to Care Act—which she signed into law in August—remains in effect between now and 2028, when it will appear on the ballot. The law removes unnecessary restrictions on abortion care later in pregnancy, ensuring patients facing complex medical circumstances can get the care they need without political interference or delays.
