Reproductive Freedom for All Georgia Condemns SB 39 as an Extreme Attack on Access to Health Care for the Trans Community

Atlanta, GA— Today, Reproductive Freedom for All Georgia strongly condemned Senate Bill 39, a harmful and politically motivated measure that would strip transgender Georgians of access to health care under the Georgia State Health Benefit Plan (SHBP). The SHBP provides health care coverage to more than half a million state employees, public school workers, retirees, and their families. If passed, SB 39 would not only deny essential care to transgender individuals but also set a dangerous precedent for future attacks on reproductive health care, contraception, and other critical medical services. Georgia lawmakers should be working to expand access to essential care, not stripping it away from those who need it most.

Alicia Stallworth, Georgia Campaigns Director for Reproductive Freedom for All, issued the following statement:

“The same political forces that have worked to restrict abortion access across Georgia and the nation are now targeting the transgender community. SB 39 is a cruel and deliberate attack on transgender Georgians, many of whom are the very public servants who keep our state running. We refuse to let the government dictate who deserves and has access to essential medical care. Every Georgian deserves the freedom to make personal health care decisions without government interference.”

Every major medical organization, including the American Medical Association, the American Academy of Pediatrics, and the American Psychological Association, recognizes gender-affirming care as evidence-based and medically necessary. Restricting this care is not only discriminatory—it contradicts established medical research and endangers the well-being of Georgia families.
