In Partisan Move, Speaker Mike Johnson Still Refuses to Swear In Adelita Grijalva, First Latina Elected to Congress from Arizona

Phoenix, AZ — Despite Adelita Grijalva’s overwhelming and historic special election victory in Arizona’s 7th Congressional District, Speaker Mike Johnson has refused to swear her into Congress. Several newly elected Republican officials have been sworn in by Speaker Johnson this year, making it clear that this is a partisan political move. Just this week, Arizona Attorney General Kris Mayes filed a lawsuit against Speaker Johnson for failing to swear in Grijalva.

Reproductive Freedom for All Director of Arizona Campaigns Athena Salman released the following statement condemning Speaker Johnson’s decision:

“It’s been one month since Adelita Grijalva was elected to represent Arizonans, but because Speaker Johnson won’t do his job, 812,000 Arizonans are without a voice in Congress. It’s been one month, and none of her GOP colleagues in the state have said a peep about it, including neighboring Representative Juan Ciscomani. Instead of patronizing Rep.-Elect Grijalva and saying she ‘doesn’t know how it works around here,’ Speaker Johnson should end his obstruction of Arizona’s first Latina and swear Adelita in. Our 90,000 Arizona members are fired up and ready to hold the Congressional Republicans accountable for this unprecedented abuse of power.”

In September, Grijalva won the special election for Arizona’s 7th Congressional District and became the first Latina to represent Arizona in Congress. Reproductive Freedom for All Arizona members proudly worked to mobilize voters to secure Grijalva’s victory.
