MEMO: Reproductive Freedom for All Recognizes U.S. Armed Forces, Veterans, and Their Families During National Military Appreciation Month

Every May, the country pauses to honor the men and women who have served in uniform and put their lives on the line to defend the freedoms central to our American values. Reproductive Freedom for All is proud to support them and will continue to fight for their ability to access a full spectrum of care, including reproductive health care.

Because of the Trump administration’s actions this past year, veterans are coming home to find access to reproductive health care stripped from themselves and their families. In December, the Trump administration implemented a rule banning abortion care and counseling for VA beneficiaries, rescinding a Veterans Affairs policy that had allowed veterans and eligible family members and caretakers to access abortion care through the VA in cases of rape, incest, and life or health endangerment. When given the chance to reverse course, Senate Republicans voted in March 2026 to uphold the ban, siding with anti-abortion extremists over veterans.

Speaker Mike Johnson also personally revoked a provision from the final National Defense Authorization Act that would have expanded IVF insurance coverage for active duty service members and their families. Members of the military who serve so that Americans can build the families they choose are now being told to sacrifice their own dreams of having a family. Meanwhile, the politicians who restrict access to this care are the same ones who wrap themselves in the flag every election season and ask for veterans’ and servicemembers’ votes.

Reproductive Freedom for All’s 4 million members are committed to our country’s ongoing fight for freedom. That means fighting to restore abortion access at the VA, fighting to expand IVF coverage for military families, and fighting to hold every politician who voted against these measures accountable at the ballot box in November.
