NARAL Pro-Choice America Celebrates Lashrecse Aird’s Victory in the Democratic Primary for Virginia’s 13th Senate District

Richmond, VA— Today, Democrats in Virginia’s 13th Senate districts chose NARAL-endorsed candidate Lashrecse Aird as their nominee for state Senate. This victory over anti-abortion incumbent Joe Morrissey is crucial to the fight for reproductive freedom in Virginia, where the state House currently has a conservative majority, and state Senate Democrats have been a critical first line of defense to block anti-abortion bills.

NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju released the following statement in response to Aird’s victory:

“We are thrilled to congratulate Lashrecse Aird on her victory in the Democratic primary for Virginia’s 13th state Senate District. Now more than ever, Virginians need reproductive freedom champions in office who will fight to protect their fundamental freedoms. We’re proud to celebrate her victory tonight and ready to continue to fight by her side tomorrow to ensure she’s elected this November.”

Prior to this election, Aird served from 2016-2021 in the Virginia House of Delegates, where she confirmed her role as a reproductive freedom champion. Aird voted for numerous bills to protect and advance reproductive freedom, including the Reproductive Health Protection Act, efforts to prohibit workplace discrimination on the basis of pregnancy, and a bill to repeal the abortion coverage prohibition in Virginia health insurance plans offered on the state’s health exchange.
