NARAL Pro-Choice America Condemns Iowa GOP’s Passage of Extreme Abortion Ban

Des Moines, IA — Republicans in the Iowa State Legislature, during a special session called by anti-abortion Governor Kim Reynolds for this sole purpose, banned abortion at six weeks of pregnancy. This bill, which bans abortion before many people even know they are pregnant, flies in the face of the facts: The vast majority of Iowans support the right to abortion and do not want it banned in their state. According to a recent Des Moines Register/Mediacom Iowa Poll, more than 3 in 5 Iowans believe abortion should be legal in most or all cases.

NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju released the following statement in response:

“This is just the latest example of the GOP’s plan to ban all abortion, everywhere. We can’t, and we won’t back down. Iowans and our partners on the ground are rising up to fight for reproductive freedom—and it’s time state lawmakers listened.”
