Columbia, SC — Today, the South Carolina State Legislature passed an extreme ban on abortion at 6 weeks of pregnancy, which is before many people know they are pregnant (SB 474). This comes after a similar bill was deemed unconstitutional by the state’s Supreme Court earlier this year. If enacted, the Southeast—where states throughout the region are currently enforcing extreme bans—could see its already limited access to abortion care further eroded.
NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju released the following statement in response:
“Anti-abortion Republicans in the state continue to push their radical agenda through the state legislature, despite this extreme ban having been ruled unconstitutional by the state Supreme Court. Should this ban become law and go into effect, it would effectively stamp out access to abortion care in the Southeast, impacting millions in the region. But we aren’t giving up—efforts to ban abortion have drawn widespread outcry from South Carolinians, and this latest effort will be no different. NARAL and our members remain resolute in our fight to safeguard the reproductive rights of the citizens of the Palmetto State, ensuring they have the freedom to choose when, whether, and how to start or grow their families.”
