New Battleground Poll: Todd Blanche’s Anti-Abortion Record is Toxic for Congressional Republicans Ahead of Critical Midterms

Washington, DC —  New battleground polling conducted by Reproductive Freedom for All and Public Policy Polling shows that Todd Blanche’s threats to use the Department of Justice (DOJ) to restrict abortion access are deeply unpopular and could create serious political consequences for congressional Republicans in November.

The survey of likely voters across four competitive congressional districts (AZ-01, AZ-06, PA-07, PA-08, MI-07, and MI-10) found that voters broadly reject efforts to use federal law enforcement to restrict or ban abortion nationwide, including in states where abortion is legal.

The findings informed Reproductive Freedom for All’s latest digital ad campaign in MI-07 and MI-10. The ads expose Blanche’s threats to reproductive freedom and call out congressional Republicans  for empowering him to pursue an anti-abortion agenda from the nation’s top law enforcement agency.

Earlier this month, news broke that Todd Blanche was making promises to anti-abortion extremists behind the scenes. On a private call hosted by the White House Faith Office, he pledged that the DOJ would work with federal agencies and the White House to make the Dobbs decision “permanent in every single state”—essentially promising to enact a national abortion ban.

Blanche’s comments expose the reality behind Donald Trump and Republicans’ claims that abortion policy should be “left to the states”: They are pursuing new ways to restrict abortion nationwide without requiring Congress to pass a national ban.

Key findings of the polling include:

  • 53% of voters, including 59% of Independents, are somewhat less or much less likely to vote for a Republican Congressional candidate knowing Blanche has said he will use the Justice Department to make Dobbs “permanent in every state.”
  • 59% oppose Blanche using the Comstock Act to restrict access to abortion, including 71% of Independents and 82% ages 18-45.
  • 53% say the argument that Republicans use power to strip away women’s freedom is a convincing reason to vote against Republican candidates this fall.

Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:

“Poll after poll shows voters overwhelmingly reject this administration’s efforts to undermine our reproductive freedom, and that includes the appointment of anti-abortion extremist Todd Blanche. Trump lied when he campaigned on leaving abortion to the states and Senate Republicans handed Blanche the power to turn their anti-abortion agenda into a nationwide threat. People in Michigan, Arizona, and states across the country do not want politicians taking away their fundamental freedoms and are fired up to vote for reproductive freedom champions who will hold Trump and his allies in Congress accountable.”

For more than 55 years, Reproductive Freedom for All (formerly NARAL Pro-Choice America) has fought to protect and advance reproductive freedom at the federal and state levels—including access to abortion care, birth control, pregnancy and post-partum care, and paid family leave—for everybody. Reproductive Freedom for All is powered by its more than 4.5 million members from every state and congressional district in the country, representing the 8 in 10 Americans who support legal abortion.
