New Polling From NARAL Pro-Choice Georgia and Planned Parenthood Southeast Advocates Shows Black Men in Georgia Overwhelmingly Oppose Efforts to Restrict Reproductive Freedom
Georgia — Today, NARAL Pro-Choice Georgia and Planned Parenthood Southeast Advocates released new polling from EMC Research showing that Georgia voters overwhelmingly oppose efforts to restrict abortion access and vehemently oppose other efforts to restrict contraception. 92% of Georgia voters do not believe abortion should be illegal. Additionally, 86% of Black men oppose Roe being overturned, and 79% oppose Georgia’s abortion ban.
NARAL Pro-Choice America President Mini Timmaraju released the following statement in response:
“Georgians do not want to live in a state where health care providers are scared away from providing essential abortion care to their patients by the threat of police officers showing up at their door. But this is the world extremist Georgia politicians have made. Georgians deserve better, and that’s why NARAL is fighting to create a world where we are all free to live the lives we want, not the lives politicians think we should be satisfied with.”
This new polling was announced at a press conference held earlier today, featuring Timmaraju alongside Georgia State Senator and candidate for attorney general Jen Jordan, Georgia State Representative and candidate for secretary of state Representative Bee Nguyen, and Georgia House Minority Chief Deputy Whip Debra Bazemore.
EMC Research’s polling also found that:

- 92% of Georgia voters do not believe abortion should be illegal.
- 86% of Black men oppose Roe being overturned, and 79% oppose Georgia’s abortion ban.
- 62% of voters oppose – and 55% strongly oppose – the recent overturning of Roe vs. Wade by the U.S. Supreme Court.
- 62% of voters oppose – and 52% strongly oppose – Georgia’s six-week ban on abortion, which was signed into law by Gov. Kemp in 2019.
- 95% of white women ages 30-49 oppose potential legislation prohibiting access to birth control, with 92% strongly opposing. 86% also oppose – with 76% strongly opposing – prohibiting access to emergency contraception.
- 74% of voters oppose prohibiting access to prescription medications for at-home abortion care or miscarriage management.
- 83% oppose criminal penalties for medical professionals who provide reproductive healthcare.
Governor Brian Kemp was recently caught on tape stating he is open to banning contraception. Last week, NARAL Pro-Choice Georgia released polling from EMC Research showing that 94% of Georgians oppose—with 87% strongly opposed—banning birth control. Stacey Abrams, the NARAL-endorsed reproductive freedom champion, is locked in a tight race with Gov. Kemp and their contrast is as stark as ever.
Recently, NARAL Pro-Choice America released an analysis of mail ballot requests in Georgia that signaled an early sign of enthusiasm for Democrats amid anti-choice Republicans’ attacks on reproductive freedom. The analysis, conducted by TargetSmart, a leading progressive data and polling firm, found that women, people of color, and Democrats are outpacing Republicans and key conservative voting blocks in mail ballot requests.
In June, the U.S. Supreme Court overturned Roe in its decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization—ending the constitutional right to abortion and opening the door for extremist state lawmakers to put total bans on abortion in place. This decision is already having a devastating impact throughout the country as 15 states, including Georgia, have begun enforcing extreme or total bans on abortion. The people hurt most by these bans and restrictions are those who already face barriers to accessing abortion care—including women; Black, Indigenous, and other people of color; those working to make ends meet; the LGBTQ+ community; immigrants; young people; those living in rural communities; and people with disabilities.
