On 26th Anniversary of Mifepristone’s FDA Approval, Reproductive Freedom for All Warns Access Is Under Unprecedented Attack
Washington, DC — Twenty-six years ago today, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved mifepristone, the first medication in the two-drug regimen used for medication abortion. Decades of evidence and hundreds of studies have established that mifepristone is safe and effective.
Medication abortion accounts for more than half of all abortion care nationwide. Despite over 200 peer-reviewed studies proving its safety and efficacy, the Trump administration and its allies have launched a coordinated attack against the medication—through the courts, Congress, and federal agencies—to fulfill their ultimate goal of banning abortion nationwide.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“The Trump administration and its extreme allies have repeatedly chosen to put their anti-abortion ideology over decades of scientific evidence. But mifepristone is overwhelmingly popular, and voters will not allow these attacks to continue—they will make their support clear at the ballot box this November.”
These attacks are deeply out of step with the public. Eight in ten Americans support the legal right to abortion care, including medication abortion.
The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit recently heard oral arguments in Louisiana v. FDA, a lawsuit seeking to end mail and pharmacy access to mifepristone nationwide by reinstating a medically unnecessary requirement that patients obtain mifepristone in person. If the case plays out in favor of anti-abortion extremists, patients across the country could be forced to travel to a health center or hospital to pick up their medication, making abortion care far more difficult to obtain, especially for telehealth patients. Several other cases aiming to limit access to mifepristone are currently winding their way through federal courts.
Meanwhile, Republican lawmakers on the Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) Committee released a bogus “report” on mifepristone in August. This report relies on discredited claims to sow distrust in the safety and efficacy of the medication, and cements a clear pattern of scientific evidence being disregarded in favor of extreme ideology.
The report came as the FDA also continues its sham “review” of mifepristone. Trump recently nominated Heidi Overton to serve as FDA commissioner, an anti-abortion extremist who has called abortion “corrosive” and called for medically unnecessary restrictions on medication abortion. Newly-confirmed Attorney General Todd Blanche has also vowed to work across the Trump administration to find ways to cut off access to mifepristone nationwide.
Mifepristone is more at risk than ever 26 years after its FDA approval. With less than 40 days until critical midterm elections that will determine the future of abortion access nationwide, voters have the power to take back the House and Senate and install a reproductive freedom majority that can protect access to mifepristone and hold Trump and his allies accountable for these anti-science attacks.
