On the Third Anniversary of the Overturning of Roe v. Wade, Being Pregnant in America is More Dangerous Than Ever; Reproductive Freedom For All Georgia Continues Campaign to Mobilize against Trump & GOP
Washington, DC — Three years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court — stacked with Trump-appointed justices — handed down its decision in Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization that overruled Roe v. Wade and the federal right to abortion. Since then, 21 states have eliminated or restricted access to abortion because of abortion bans. The Trump administration and Republicans continue to push policies designed to eliminate reproductive health care, including abortion, contraception, and IVF – all in their ultimate pursuit of a national abortion ban.
In the past three years, our Georgia organizers have repeatedly tried to overturn the 6-week abortion ban that GOP lawmakers passed after Roe was overturned, and we are seeing the devastating impacts of this ban as we mourn the deaths of Adriana Smith, Candi Miller, and Amber Nicole Thurman. This year, Georgia lawmakers had the chance to pass three pieces of legislation, including the Reproductive Freedom Act, that would have restored and further protected access to reproductive care in Georgia. Not only did GOP legislatures block these bills from even being heard, they instead entertained a near-total abortion ban.
Additionally, our organizers have pushed Governor Kemp on his refusal to expand Medicaid, despite statistics proving it would significantly increase access to reproductive health care—including birth control, prenatal and postpartum care, STI screenings, cancer screenings, and maternal health services.
Reproductive Freedom for All Director of Georgia Campaigns Alicia Stallworth released the following statement:
“Donald Trump and the GOP have waged a relentless attack on our reproductive freedom, and Georgians are paying the price. After Roe fell, Governor Brian Kemp and Attorney General Chris Carr passed an extreme six-week abortion ban. Reproductive Freedom for All Georgia is continuing to meet this moment — and we’re not backing down. We are organizing, mobilizing, and fighting for access to reproductive care. Georgians deserve leaders who trust us to make decisions about our bodies, our families, and our futures, and we won’t stop until reproductive freedom is a reality for all Georgians — no matter who you are or where you live.”
