Reproductive Freedom for All Arizona Applauds State Democrats’ Attempt to Expand Abortion Access in Arizona
PHOENIX, AZ — Yesterday, state Representative Brian Garcia’s (D-Tempe) strike-everything amendment to HB 2681 was voted down in committee by anti-abortion Republicans. The amendment aimed to repeal the following: the telemedicine ban on abortion, the criminalization of advertising abortion and contraception, restrictions on providers that can prescribe medication abortion, and the ban on mailing medication abortion. The Republicans proceeded to advance HB 2681, sponsored by Rep. Rachel Keshel (R-Tucson), aiming to add more unnecessary restrictions to medication abortion in Arizona. This comes after Rep. Keshel introduced HCR 2058 targeting Proposition 139, which Arizona voters overwhelmingly passed last year to protect abortion rights in the state constitution. Proposition 139 also received 23,669 more votes than Rep. Keshel in LD17.
Reproductive Freedom for All Director of Arizona Campaigns Athena Salman released the following statement:
“We applaud Representative Brian Garcia and Arizona Democrats for attempting to repeal these dangerous and unnecessary restrictions on abortion care to increase access in our state. Instead of respecting the will of the voters and supporting Garcia’s amendment, Rep. Rachel Keshel and her fellow republican legislators advanced her bill that would flagrantly violate our constitutional right to abortion care. We’re going to continue to hold anti-abortion lawmakers accountable for working to undermine our reproductive freedom.”
