Reproductive Freedom for All Arizona Releases Statement on Alleged Sexual Assault of AZ-08 Congressional Candidate Bernadette Greene-Placentia

PHOENIX, AZ — On Wednesday, the Phoenix New Times reported that congressional candidate Bernadette Greene-Placentia shared that she was raped while repairing her campaign signs.

Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju and Director of Arizona Campaigns Athena Salman released the following statement:

“We strongly commend Bernadette Greene-Placentia for her bravery in sharing her story publicly. We stand with Bernadette and every survivor of sexual violence. This alleged assault fits a disturbing, well-documented pattern of threats and abuse against women who run for office and hold elected positions. Attacks like this stem from a culture that excuses sexual violence, whether on the campaign trail or a college campus.

Reproductive Freedom for All and our Arizona chapter call for a thorough investigation and for the perpetrators to be held accountable. Women’s full participation in society requires safety from violence and full accountability. This issue is paramount to women’s health, economic opportunity, and freedom to shape their own futures.”
