Press Release
Phoenix, AZ — Today, the Arizona Supreme Court ruled to delay the enforcement of the state’s 1864 abortion ban. The earliest the law can take effect is now Sept. 26. The ban would otherwise soon cut off access to abortion in the state. This decision comes after Democrats in the state legislature passed a bill to repeal the ban, which was then signed into law by Gov. Katie Hobbs.
Reproductive Freedom for All Director of Arizona Campaigns Athena Salman released the following statement:
“This ruling is a significant step for all Arizonans needing access to abortion care. We’re grateful to Attorney General Kris Mayes for continuing the fight to stop this horrific, cruel abortion ban from taking effect, and we will be fighting by her side every step of the way. While we’re grateful for this ruling, the very fact that there is a question that this ban could go into effect underscores the urgency of this fall’s elections. We must restore the right to abortion here in Arizona by passing the ballot initiative establishing a right to abortion in the state constitution, and nationwide by electing champions who will restore the federal right to abortion.”
