Reproductive Freedom for All Celebrates as Chris Pappas Defeats John E. Sununu in New Hampshire Senate Race

Washington, DC — Today, Reproductive Freedom for All-endorsed candidate Chris Pappas defeated anti-abortion former Sen. John E. Sununu in the race for New Hampshire’s open U.S. Senate seat, becoming the first openly gay man elected to the U.S. Senate.

Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:

“Chris Pappas has never treated our reproductive freedom as negotiable, and Granite Staters chose a champion who will fight to protect and expand abortion access. We’re ready to fight alongside him to turn that victory into lasting protections for reproductive freedom.”

Reproductive Freedom for All endorsed Pappas in December 2025 as part of its first slate of 2026 Senate endorsements, and backed his campaign through My Body. My Ballot., a $23.5 million campaign and the organization’s largest-ever midterm electoral program. Mini Timmaraju also campaigned with Pappas in the final stretch of the election to mobilize voters across his reproductive freedom record. Reproductive Freedom for All Freedom Fund also invested $100,000 in mail targeting nearly 180,000 New Hampshire voters.

Pappas has represented New Hampshire’s 1st Congressional District since 2019, when he became the state’s first openly gay member of Congress. Before that, he served three terms on New Hampshire’s Executive Council, where he voted to protect funding for Planned Parenthood when anti-abortion politicians tried to strip it away. In the House, he cosponsored the Women’s Health Protection Act to codify federal protections for abortion access.

During his one term in the Senate, Sununu voted for a federal abortion ban, voted against adding an exception to protect women’s health, and voted to confirm Samuel Alito to the Supreme Court. This year, a Trump-affiliated super PAC spent more than $10 million attacking Pappas.
