Washington, DC — Today, Reproductive Freedom for All-endorsed candidate and former North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper won his bid to represent the state in the U.S. Senate, defeating Trump loyalist and anti-abortion extremist Michael Whatley.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“Roy Cooper has defended reproductive freedom at every turn throughout his career, and he is now taking that resolve to the U.S. Senate. Anti-abortion groups dumped millions of dollars into Michael Whatley’s campaign, but voters have made clear that North Carolina’s future—and their fundamental freedoms—are not for sale.”
Cooper was part of Reproductive Freedom for All’s first slate of frontline U.S. Senate endorsements in the 2026 midterm cycle. As part of My Body. My Ballot., the organization’s historic $23.5 million midterm program, Reproductive Freedom for All organized and mobilized voters across North Carolina to help elect Cooper and reproductive freedom champions up and down the ballot, along with launching a new chapter program with dedicated staff on the ground. In the final stretch, Mini Timmaraju and Sen. Raphael Warnock campaigned for Cooper, mobilizing voters around reproductive freedom as early voting began. To help secure this critical victory, Reproductive Freedom for All mobilized its more than 128,000 members in the state.
As governor, Cooper expanded Medicaid for more than 690,000 North Carolinians and held the line against extremists in the legislature determined to restrict abortion access. He vetoed the state GOP’s abortion ban, signed an executive order to protect North Carolina providers and patients from out-of-state attacks, and worked tirelessly to safeguard medication abortion access.
