Washington, DC — Today, Reproductive Freedom for All-endorsed Gov. JB Pritzker defeated anti-abortion Republican Darren Bailey to become the first Democrat elected to three consecutive terms as governor of Illinois.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“JB Pritzker is an irreplaceable friend to our movement and an unstoppable force for protecting reproductive freedom, and we are thrilled to celebrate this victory. With Pritzker in Springfield, Illinois will remain a lifeline for patients across the Midwest and keep its doors open to every patient that has been pushed out of their home state by GOP abortion bans.”
Reproductive Freedom for All Director of State Campaigns Pavitra Abraham released the following statement:
“Governor Pritzker’s reelection is a mandate to protect reproductive rights and ensure politicians cannot take those freedoms away. Reproductive Freedom for All’s Illinois members helped mobilize voters to make that message heard at the ballot box.”
Pritzker was the first-ever guest on My Body. My Pod. and is a longstanding champion of reproductive freedom. Reproductive Freedom for All backed Pritzker’s campaign through My Body. My Ballot., a $23.5 million campaign and the organization’s largest-ever midterm electoral program. The campaign mobilizes the 8 in 10 Americans who support legal abortion.
In 2019, three years before the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, Pritzker signed the Reproductive Health Act, establishing access to abortion as a fundamental right under Illinois law. He has since signed laws protecting patients and providers from out-of-state legal attacks, requiring full Medicaid coverage of reproductive health care, cracking down on fake clinics that deceive patients, and shielding patients’ medical records.
Darren Bailey has said he would support a total abortion ban in Illinois. This year, he dropped abortion from his platform while his running mate called it a “sin against God.”
