Press Release
Lansing, MI — Today, Reproductive Freedom for All-endorsed candidate Jocelyn Benson won her bid for Michigan governor, defeating Trump-endorsed anti-abortion extremist John James.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“Reproductive Freedom for All went all in for Jocelyn Benson because she has always defended Michiganders’ reproductive freedom. Tonight, Michiganders chose her over a Trump-endorsed ticket that wanted to roll those rights back, making it clear that anti-abortion extremism is a dealbreaker for voters.”
Reproductive Freedom for All Director of Michigan Campaigns Shanay Watson-Whittaker released the following statement:
“Our more than 157,000 Michigan members helped make sure voters knew what was at stake: Jocelyn Benson defended Proposal 3, while John James and Jay DeBoyer threatened to undermine it. Michiganders organized, voted, and elected a governor who will answer to them—not Trump or anti-abortion extremists.”
Reproductive Freedom for All endorsed Benson in February, and backed her campaign through My Body. My Ballot., a $23.5 million campaign and the organization’s largest-ever midterm electoral program. The campaign mobilizes the 8 in 10 Americans who support legal abortion. To help secure this critical victory, Reproductive Freedom for All mobilized its more than 157,000 members in the state.
Benson helped lead support for Proposal 3, Michigan’s constitutional amendment protecting abortion rights, which voters passed decisively in 2022. As secretary of state, she was among the state officials who defended the amendment from efforts to overturn the will of Michigan voters.
James has called himself “100% pro-life.” State Rep. Jay DeBoyer, James’ running mate, suggested establishing a 12-week abortion ban in Michigan and promised “to do everything to get the most conservative, most pro-life bill passed” in leaked audio that surfaced in September.
