Press Release
Detroit, MI — Today, Reproductive Freedom for All-endorsed candidate Dr. Abdul El-Sayed defeated Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan’s U.S. Senate race, making history as the first Muslim elected to the Senate.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“Abdul El-Sayed is heading to the U.S. Senate to make history and give Michiganders a champion who trusts them—not politicians—to make their own decisions about abortion care. For the second election in a row, Michigan voters rejected Mike Rogers and his relentless anti-abortion agenda.”
Reproductive Freedom for All endorsed El-Sayed as part of My Body. My Ballot., a $23.5 million campaign and the organization’s largest-ever midterm electoral program. To help secure this critical victory, Reproductive Freedom for All mobilized its more than 157,000 members in the state and spent nearly $700,000, including a six-figure paid canvassing program and a $200,000 digital ad campaign exposing Mike Rogers’ anti-abortion record.
El-Sayed made reproductive freedom, affordable health care, and economic security core pillars of his campaign. In September, Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju joined El-Sayed, former Vice President Kamala Harris, and more than 20 community experts in Detroit for a roundtable on Black maternal health, underscoring the stakes for Michigan families ahead of Election Day.
Rogers entered the race with a long record of attacking reproductive freedom. During his time in Congress, he lobbied for a national abortion ban and backed legislation to revoke federal approval of mifepristone. He also opposed Michigan’s 2022 ballot proposal enshrining reproductive rights in the state constitution. Rogers aligned himself with Trump as MAGA groups poured millions into Michigan to boost his campaign.
