Reproductive Freedom for All Celebrates as Juliana Stratton Wins Illinois Senate Race
Washington, DC — Today, Reproductive Freedom for All-endorsed candidate and Lieutenant Governor Juliana Stratton defeated Republican Don Tracy in the race for Illinois’ open U.S. Senate seat. She becomes the second Black woman Illinois voters have elected to the U.S. Senate, following Carol Moseley Braun.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“Juliana Stratton helped make Illinois a reproductive freedom beacon in the Midwest, and now voters have sent her to the U.S. Senate to continue that work nationwide. We’re thrilled to have another champion in the chamber to fight back against the Trump administration’s attacks.”
Reproductive Freedom for All endorsed Stratton in May and backed her campaign through My Body. My Ballot., a $23.5 million campaign and the organization’s largest-ever midterm electoral program. The campaign mobilizes the 8 in 10 Americans who support legal abortion and holds anti-abortion politicians accountable at the ballot box.
Stratton has served as Illinois’ lieutenant governor since 2019. She helped pass the Reproductive Health Act in 2019, three years before the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade, establishing access to abortion as a fundamental right under Illinois law. As chair of the Illinois Council on Women and Girls, she has worked to protect patients and providers from out-of-state legal attacks and expand access to medication abortion, birth control, and fertility treatments. After the Dobbs decision, she testified before the Senate Judiciary Committee about its human consequences, including the strain that abortion bans in neighboring states placed on Illinois.
Don Tracy, a former chair of the Illinois Republican Party, held extreme anti-abortion positions and backed the Hyde Amendment’s deadly ban on federal funding for abortion.
