Press Release
Washington, DC — Today, Reproductive Freedom for All-endorsed candidate Teresa Benitez-Thompson defeated anti-abortion extremist David Flippo and turned Nevada’s 2nd Congressional District blue, becoming the district’s first Latina representative. This is the first time in history the district will be represented by a Democrat.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“Tonight is a political earthquake in Nevada as voters elected a Democrat to this district for the first time in history. Teresa Benitez-Thompson has spent her career fighting for Nevada families and working to make health care more affordable, and she’ll bring that same fight to Congress.”
Reproductive Freedom for All endorsed Thompson in August as part of My Body. My Ballot., a $23.5 million campaign and the organization’s largest-ever midterm electoral program. To help secure this critical victory, Reproductive Freedom for All mobilized its more than 57,000 members in the state.
Benitez-Thompson served in the Nevada Assembly for 12 years, became the first Latina to serve as majority leader, and helped usher in the country’s first majority-female state legislature. She fought to establish Nevada’s public-option health care program, expand access to contraception, address maternal mortality, and increase transparency in prescription drug pricing. She also served as chief of staff to Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford, helping defend Nevadans’ rights against harmful Trump administration policies.
David Flippo is an anti-abortion extremist who believes that abortion should be allowed only in “the narrowest possible circumstances.” He secured President Donald Trump’s endorsement in the closing weeks of his primary campaign.
Benitez-Thompson’s victory came as Nevadans approved Question 6 for the second time, codifying the right to abortion in the state constitution.
