Reproductive Freedom for All Celebrates as Voters Reclaim the Michigan House and Elect a Reproductive Freedom Majority
Lansing, MI — Today, Michigan voters flipped the state House of Representatives and elected a reproductive freedom majority, reclaiming the chamber two years after Republicans took control. This comes as Democrats maintained control of the state Senate and elected Jocelyn Benson as governor, securing a reproductive freedom trifecta for the first time in over a decade.
Reproductive Freedom for All Director of Michigan Campaigns Shanay Watson-Whittaker released the following statement:
“Michigan voters took back the House and restored a Democratic trifecta, paving the way for more protections for reproductive freedom. As national attacks on health care intensify, Michigan continues to serve as a vital beacon and sanctuary for reproductive freedom in the Midwest.”
Reproductive Freedom for All backed candidates in key Michigan House races through My Body. My Ballot., a $23.5 million campaign and the organization’s largest-ever midterm electoral program. The campaign mobilizes the 8 in 10 Americans who support legal abortion and holds anti-abortion politicians accountable at the ballot box. To help secure this critical victory, Reproductive Freedom for All mobilized its over 157,000 members in the state.
Michigan voters approved Proposal 3 with 56% of the vote in 2022, establishing a constitutional right to reproductive freedom. During the previous reproductive freedom majority, lawmakers enacted the Reproductive Health Act, which repealed medically unnecessary restrictions on abortion providers, eliminated criminal penalties related to medication abortion, and removed barriers to insurance coverage of abortion care.
