Washington, DC — Today, Reproductive Freedom for All-endorsed candidate Dr. Annie Andrews defeated appointed Sen. Darline Graham in the race for South Carolina’s U.S. Senate seat in a state Donald Trump carried by 18 points in 2024. Andrews is the first woman South Carolina voters have elected to the U.S. Senate and the first Democrat to win a Senate race in the state since 1998.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“By electing Dr. Annie Andrews, South Carolinians set off a political earthquake that should put every Republican on notice: reproductive freedom wins across party lines, and no seat is safe for politicians who want to restrict abortion access—even in deep red states.”
Reproductive Freedom for All endorsed Dr. Andrews in July as part of My Body. My Ballot., a $23.5 million campaign and the organization’s largest-ever midterm electoral program. The campaign mobilizes the 8 in 10 Americans who support legal abortion and holds anti-abortion politicians accountable at the ballot box. Andrews’ win in one of the reddest states in the country is the clearest proof point yet that abortion is a winning issue everywhere.
A pediatrician, Andrews spent 14 years caring for children at MUSC Children’s Hospital in Charleston. She entered the Senate race after Donald Trump put Robert F. Kennedy Jr. in charge of the Department of Health and Human Services and ran on enacting federal protections for abortion access.
Gov. Henry McMaster appointed Graham to the Senate in July at Donald Trump’s urging and launched her campaign for a full term with Trump’s endorsement, promising to advance his anti-abortion agenda.
