Washington, DC — Today, Virginia voters approved Amendment 1, the Right to Reproductive Freedom Amendment, which now permanently ensures Virginians’ right to make decisions regarding their own reproductive healthcare without government interference.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“Virginians have made the Commonwealth a firewall against the abortion bans that have pushed care out of reach across the South. This victory safeguards patients far beyond Virginia’s borders and proves once again that voters choose reproductive freedom when it is on the ballot.”
Reproductive Freedom for All participated in the Virginians for Reproductive Freedom coalition this year, invested six figures, and mobilized volunteers to canvass through My Body. My Ballot., the organization’s $23.5 million midterm electoral program.
Reproductive Freedom for All invested heavily in this effort and helped lay the groundwork for this victory during Virginia’s 2025 elections by electing leaders who advanced Amendment 1 to the ballot. We knocked more than 40,000 doors, made over 9,000 calls, and mobilized our 112,000 Virginia members to elect Gov. Abigail Spanberger, Lt. Gov. Ghazala Hashmi, Attorney General Jay Jones, and a reproductive freedom majority in the House of Delegates. That campaign also included a six-figure paid canvass operation, targeted advertising, and a campus organizing program at Virginia Tech.
Virginia remains the only state in the South without a post-Dobbs abortion ban and a critical access point for patients throughout the region. Amendment 1 protects health care providers’ ability to care for their patients without political interference and will take effect January 1, 2027.
