Reproductive Freedom for All Celebrates as Keisha Lance Bottoms Makes History as Georgia’s Next Governor

Atlanta, GA — Today, Reproductive Freedom for All-endorsed candidate Keisha Lance Bottoms defeated anti-abortion extremist Rick Jackson in the race for governor of Georgia, becoming Georgia’s first woman and first Black governor, making her the first Black woman governor elected in U.S. history.

Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:

“Keisha Lance Bottoms put the deadly consequences of Georgia’s abortion ban at the center of this race and gave voters a clear choice. Rick Jackson tried to buy his way into the governor’s mansion while backing a total abortion ban, but instead with this win, Georgia voters delivered a mandate to restore access to abortion care.”

Reproductive Freedom for All Director of State Campaigns Pavitra Abraham released the following statement:

“Our nearly 100,000 members across Georgia mobilized voters across the state and made sure voters knew the stakes for reproductive freedom in this must-win governor’s race. We’re excited to work with Keisha Lance Bottoms to address Georgia’s maternal mortality crisis, end abortion restrictions, and ensure patients can get the reproductive health care they need.”

Reproductive Freedom for All endorsed Bottoms in August as part of the organization’s historic My Body. My Ballot. midterm program, a $23.5 million campaign to mobilize voters, hold anti-abortion politicians accountable, and elect reproductive freedom champions in key races across the country. Reproductive Freedom for All mobilized its nearly 100,000 members in Georgia and funded paid canvass programs to reach voters through Election Day.

As governor, Bottoms will have the power to veto new abortion restrictions and lead the fight to protect and expand access to reproductive care. Amber Nicole Thurman and Candi Miller are no longer alive because Georgia’s deadly abortion ban denied them life-saving care, and Bottoms has pledged to repeal it and confront the state’s maternal mortality crisis.

Rick Jackson, a billionaire health care executive who set a record for self-funding in a Georgia governor’s primary, supports the state’s abortion ban and said he would sign a total ban if one reached his desk. He also refused to appear at the Atlanta Press Club debates, the first general election candidate for governor to skip them since 1994. Bottoms slammed Jackson’s anti-abortion record and asked him to answer for his support for bans that have killed women on the debate stage in the final stretch.
