Reproductive Freedom for All Celebrates Ghazala Hashmi’s Historic Victory in Virginia Lieutenant Governor’s Race
Washington, DC — Today, Virginia voters elected Ghazala Hashmi as the commonwealth’s next lieutenant governor. Hashmi is a reproductive freedom champion who led the Right to Contraception Act in the Virginia Senate. She will be the first Muslim and South Asian American elected to hold the office in Virginia. Since the fall of Roe v. Wade, abortion access has been decimated in Southern states, leaving Virginia as the only safe haven state for people seeking abortion care.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“Congratulations to Ghazala Hashmi on her historic victory as the first Muslim and South Asian American lieutenant governor in the commonwealth’s history. Her leadership as a reproductive freedom champion will be critical in our fight to protect and expand abortion access in Virginia and throughout the South. Our Virginia members worked tirelessly to make calls, knock doors, and send texts, all to help secure this pivotal victory for Virginians.”
Virginia’s 2025 election is a bellwether for the future of reproductive freedom in states across the country heading into 2026. Reproductive Freedom for All spent $1 million on the “Your Vote, Your Freedom” campaign in Virginia, including:
● Launching a six-figure paid canvass operation to engage and mobilize key voters
● Knocking on 36,500 doors, making 12,000 calls, and sending thousands of texts, as well as partnering with the Virginia Coordinated Campaign on multiple Northern Virginia canvasses
● Organizing multiple events, educating our 112,000 members in Virginia about what’s at stake, including a campus program at our Virginia Tech chapter to turn out the vote
