Reproductive Freedom for All Celebrates Reelection of Justice Anita Earls to the North Carolina Supreme Court

Raleigh, NC — Today, Reproductive Freedom for All-endorsed Justice Anita Earls won reelection to the North Carolina Supreme Court, defeating Republican state Rep. Sarah Stevens.

Reproductive Freedom for All Director of State Campaigns Pavitra Abraham released the following statement:

“Sarah Stevens helped write North Carolina’s abortion ban and wanted a seat on the court that may decide the future of reproductive freedom in the state. Voters rejected that power grab, kept Justice Anita Earls on the bench, and stopped Republicans from expanding their court majority.”

Reproductive Freedom for All endorsed Earls in October as part of the organization’s historic My Body. My Ballot. midterm program, a $23.5 million campaign and the organization’s largest-ever midterm electoral program. To help secure this critical victory, Reproductive Freedom for All mobilized its more than 128,000 members in the state.

Stevens was one of the architects of North Carolina’s 12-week abortion ban, which remains in effect today. She presented the bill and voted with her Republican colleagues to override Gov. Roy Cooper’s veto, making it law. She has also voted against expanding Medicaid and said she supports defunding it.

The North Carolina Supreme Court has the final word on interpreting the state constitution, including its protections for reproductive freedom and voting rights. The court has a 5-2 Republican majority, and Earls is its only Black justice. Elected in 2018, she previously served in the U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division and co-founded the Southern Coalition for Social Justice, where she led major voting rights and redistricting challenges. With North Carolina facing ongoing challenges to its electoral maps, her reelection will shape how those disputes are decided.
