Reproductive Freedom for All Celebrates the Striking Down of the 24-Hour Waiting Period for Abortion in Michigan
Detroit, MI — On Tuesday, a Michigan Court of Claims judge struck down state laws mandating a 24-hour waiting period for an abortion. Judge Sima Patel ruled that the laws violated the Reproductive Freedom for All amendment to Michigan’s Constitution. Reproductive Freedom for All Michigan worked to get this measure approved by voters in 2022.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“This ruling is a powerful reminder that when we fight to protect our rights — and win — those protections mean something. Michiganders made their voices heard in 2022, and the courts listened. We will continue to work to make abortion care more accessible for everyone.”
Reproductive Freedom for Director of Michigan Campaigns Shanay Watson-Whittaker released the following statement:
“This ruling eliminates a significant barrier to care, making it easier for Michiganders to access abortion care. This is a hard-fought victory for our Michigan chapter and abortion rights advocates across the state who worked to pass Prop 3 in 2022, enshrining our reproductive freedom in the state’s constitution. This ruling will continue to ease the burden on Michiganders so they can access reproductive care.”
