Reproductive Freedom for All Condemns FDA for Moving Ahead with Sham Review of Mifepristone
Washington, DC — Today, new leadership at Trump’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA) confirmed that the agency is rushing through its politically motivated review of mifepristone ahead of critical midterm elections. Administration officials confirmed that the “study” has been underway for months, and that an interim report could be released as early as July—which will unleash even more chaos and confusion that providers and patients will be forced to navigate.
Acting FDA Commissioner Kyle Diamantas—who pledged to be “the most pro-life head of FDA we’ve ever had”—called anti-abortion groups within hours of being appointed and has made accelerating this review his top priority.
This comes just weeks after the Supreme Court left its temporary stay in Louisiana v. FDA in place, preserving access to mifepristone for the time being while litigation continues at the lower court, and amid mounting pressure from anti-abortion groups that led to FDA Commissioner Martin Makary’s ousting. Mifepristone has been approved by the FDA for more than two decades and is backed by extensive medical evidence demonstrating its safety and efficacy.

“Trump and his allies have handed the keys of the FDA to fringe anti-abortion groups that have made it clear they will not stop until mifepristone is banned nationwide. The evidence on mifepristone’s safety and efficacy is clear, and has been for over two decades. They are ramming through junk science, and when they get what they want on mifepristone they will come for IVF and birth control next. The Republican agenda is increasingly out of step with the American electorate, and come November, they will be held accountable for it.”
