Reproductive Freedom for All Condemns GOP Attorneys General Attack on Telemedicine Abortion Shield Laws
Washington, DC — Yesterday, 16 Republican attorneys general sent a letter to congressional leadership urging them to override state telemedicine abortion shield laws—an aggressive and dangerous escalation in their coordinated campaign to ban abortion nationwide and punish providers, helpers, and patients.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement in response:
“These Republican attorneys general are calling on Congress to criminalize modern medical care, rip apart state protections, and reach across borders to impose abortion bans on people living in states where abortion is legal. These attacks are another step toward a national backdoor abortion ban. Shield laws are one of the strongest tools we have to protect access in a post-Roe reality—and they’re working. These laws protect providers, helpers, and patients from extremists who want to weaponize the legal system to ban abortion everywhere.”
In the wake of the fall of Roe v. Wade, telemedicine has become a vital and widely used method of access to abortion care—accounting for approximately one-quarter of all abortions in the US. Telemedicine is critical for reaching patients, especially in rural or under-resourced communities. Shield laws in states like New York, Massachusetts, and California, which provide some protection from hostile out-of-state prosecution and frivolous civil lawsuits brought by anti-abortion extremists, allow abortion funds and other helpers to continue their critical work, and ensure patients get timely, safe, and dignified care.
