Reproductive Freedom for All Condemns Governor Newsom’s Veto of AB 2164

Sacramento, CA — Today, Reproductive Freedom for All denounced Governor Gavin Newsom’s veto of AB 2164, legislation that would have strengthened California’s shield laws by protecting providers, patients, and others from extradition for legally protected abortion and gender-affirming care.

Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:

“Steve Hilton has made it very clear that he is willing to send California abortion providers to other states to face criminal charges, and we are deeply disappointed by Governor Newsom’s failure to get AB 2164 over the finish line to protect them. California must remain a safe haven for reproductive freedom and cannot leave abortion providers one election away from extradition.”

Reproductive Freedom for All Director of State Campaigns Pavitra Abraham released the following statement:

“We are deeply disappointed by Gov. Newsom’s veto of AB 2164, which leaves California’s protections for abortion providers in the hands of whoever occupies the governor’s office. We have an extreme Republican candidate at the top of the ticket this November who has been clear about his intention to extradite providers. This is a missed opportunity to ensure California abortion providers can continue providing the best care possible to their patients without risk of being prosecuted for simply doing their jobs.”
