Reproductive Freedom for All Condemns South Carolina’s Senate Bill 323 and the Coordinated Attempt to Ban Birth Control

Washington, DC —   The South Carolina Legislature is currently considering Senate Bill 323, a total abortion ban that would also set the foundation to ban birth control in the state. The hearing for this bill will be on October 1st. Meanwhile, the Trump administration is pushing to change the definition of contraception to redefine IUDs and other forms of birth control as abortion care. These coordinated attacks could lead to banning birth control in states with abortion bans.

Reproductive Freedom for All, President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:

“Not only is this a cruel abortion ban that will put people’s lives at risk, but it also puts birth control on the chopping block. It’s no coincidence this is happening as the Trump administration lays the groundwork to restrict—or even ban—contraception. These attacks prove that they never planned to stop at overturning Roe. We now must do everything in our power to stop them.”

Senate Bill 323:

  • Creates a total abortion ban that punishes abortion care as homicide, with a 30-year prison sentence
  • Has no exceptions for rape, incest, or fatal fetal diagnoses
  • Prohibits aiding and abetting abortion care, which includes providing information about abortion care, maintaining a website that has information about abortion care, or providing a referral to abortion care
  • Changes the definitions of contraception, fertilization, and pregnancy in such a way that it puts access to birth control at risk.

This month, the New York Times reported that the Trump administration intends to destroy $10 million worth of contraceptives. They are justifying this by falsely categorizing birth control as an “abortifacient.” There is no such thing as “abortifacient” birth control or contraception. This, and the South Carolina bill, are part of ongoing attempts to restrict access to birth control and lay the foundation to ban birth control nationwide.
