Reproductive Freedom for All Condemns Supreme Court Decision in Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic
Washington, DC — Today, the Supreme Court refused to recognize Medicaid patients’ right to choose Planned Parenthood as their qualified health care provider. Instead, in today’s ruling in Medina v. Planned Parenthood South Atlantic, they greenlit South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster’s decision to terminate Planned Parenthood South Atlantic (PPSAT) as a Medicaid provider because they also provide abortion care. By siding with anti-abortion extremists in this case, the MAGA majority on the Supreme Court has not only blocked access to critical health care for over a million South Carolinians, it has also paved the way for other states to do the same. As Justice Jackson stated in her dissent, this decision “will strip those South Carolinians — and countless other Medicaid recipients around the country — of a deeply personal freedom: the ‘ability to decide who treats us at our most vulnerable.’”
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement in response:
“Medicaid recipients should have the right to choose Planned Parenthood as their qualified provider, like millions of Americans do each year. This attack from the anti-abortion majority on the Supreme Court means people will not have access to vital health care.”
Planned Parenthood provides a broad spectrum of other health care services besides abortion care, such as birth control, STI testing and treatment, cancer screenings, and more.
