Reproductive Freedom for All Endorses Debbie Mucarsel-Powell for the U.S. Senate
Washington, DC — Today, Reproductive Freedom for All announced its endorsement of former Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell for the U.S. Senate in Florida in her race against Republican Senator Rick Scott. Rep. Mucarsel-Powell is running on her support for reproductive freedom and consistently earned a 100% on the Congressional Record on Reproductive Freedom during her time in Congress. Scott narrowly won his seat in 2018 by 10,033 votes. This endorsement comes as anti-abortion extremists in Tallahassee continue trying to block an abortion ballot measure through the state’s Supreme Court. This is an initiative that nearly a million Floridians—including 150,000 Republicans— signed onto that would protect abortion access in the state.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“Rick Scott wants to ban all abortion, and if he wins another term, Republicans will be one step closer to making it happen. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell is the champion we need to flip this crucial seat and secure a reproductive freedom majority in the Senate. We’re proud to endorse her in this race, and our members are ready to send her back to Washington to fight for the fundamental rights of all Floridians.”
Former Rep. Debbie Mucarsel-Powell released the following statement:
“The right to have access to abortion is on the ballot this November, and I could not be prouder to have Reproductive Freedom For All by my side in this fight,” said U.S. Senate Candidate Debbie Mucarsel-Powell. “Despite the fact that an overwhelming majority of Floridians support protecting access to abortion, Rick Scott has pushed for a national abortion ban. Together, we are ready to hold Scott accountable for putting women’s lives at risk and threatening to criminalize health care providers. I’m honored to have Reproductive Freedom For All’s endorsement.”
Rick Scott has consistently attacked reproductive freedom during his time in Congress and as governor of Florida—disregarding the values of the 67% of Floridians who support legal access to abortion—including by:
- Cosponsoring a national abortion ban in the U.S. Senate;
- Proudly saying he would have signed Florida’s dangerous six-week ban into law if he was governor.
- Voting to confirm Supreme Court Justice Amy Coney Barrett
- Doubling down on his radical position and writing off the life-or-death issue as a “tough issue for women.”
- Repeatedly signing extreme legislation that created barriers to abortion and essential reproductive health care at large, including enacting a 24-hour waiting period before somebody can access an abortion.
- Signing legislation to cut funding for reproductive health care clinics that directed people instead to middle schools, dentists, and an optometrist to seek care.
