Reproductive Freedom for All Georgia Celebrates National Midwifery Week Amid Legislative Threats to Reproductive Care

Atlanta, GA – Reproductive Freedom for All Georgia is recognizing the critical work midwives do during National Midwifery Week and beyond.

Currently, 75 counties in Georgia have no obstetrician-gynecologist (OB-GYN) or nurse midwife, creating critical gaps in care. This past legislative session, Democrats put forward a bill, supported by Reproductive Freedom for All, that would have expanded midwifery licensing and access to maternity care in Georgia. However, anti-abortion extremists in the legislature refused to even hear the bill on the floor.

Reproductive Freedom for All Director of Georgia Campaigns Alicia Stallworth released the following statement:

“Georgia is facing a maternal health care crisis. Too many pregnant people are struggling to find care, and lawmakers are still refusing to do the bare minimum to bring more doctors, providers, and midwives into our communities. For generations, Black women have borne the brunt of this crisis, and history shows they have always stood in the gap, caring for families and saving lives when systems failed us. During Midwifery Week, we are celebrating the incredible midwives serving families across Georgia, and continuing our fight to expand licensure so everyone can get the care they deserve.”
