Reproductive Freedom for All Georgia Mobilizes Supporters, Calls on Fulton County to Pass Critical Reproductive Health Measures

Atlanta, GA – Tomorrow, the Fulton County Board of Commissioners will consider three resolutions that would significantly expand access to reproductive health care and strengthen protections for existing care. If passed, the resolutions would:

  • Affirm that reproductive rights are human rights, formally condemn the criminalization of reproductive health care, and urge the state legislature to repeal Georgia’s abortion ban
  • Establish an official Women’s Commission to advise on policies around women’s health and economic security
  • Create a $1 million annual grant fund for nonprofits working on maternal health and reproductive care in light of widespread federal funding cuts

Reproductive Freedom for All Georgia’s more than 33,000 members are actively engaging their commissioners and community to ensure these resolutions move forward.

Advocate Shanette Williams—whose daughter, Amber Nicole Thurman, died in 2022 after being denied timely abortion care—released the following statement:

“These are three meaningful resolutions that speak directly to the stakes of restricting care for families like my own. While these resolutions don’t overturn Georgia’s extreme abortion ban, their passage in Fulton County would be a massive step in the right direction. I urge our commissioners to support this vital legislation and for Georgians to make their voices heard.”

Reproductive Freedom for All Director of Georgia Campaigns Alicia Stallworth released the following statement:

“In Georgia, thousands of women live in health care deserts and are forced to travel hundreds of miles to get the health care they need—often to Fulton County. Fulton County Commissioners now have the opportunity to transform efforts to ensure women can access the care they need and to fight back against our state’s deadly abortion ban. Georgians deserve leaders who are committed to solving this health care crisis, and commissioners must pass these important resolutions.”

These local efforts align with recent action at the federal level, where Representative Nikema Williams (D-GA) introduced similar legislation to recognize abortion as a human right nationwide.
