Reproductive Freedom for All on Trump Ousting FDA Commissioner Amid Mounting Pressure from Anti-Abortion Extremists Who Want to Ban Mifepristone
Washington, DC — Reporting from Politico revealed the Trump administration is moving to remove FDA Commissioner Marty Makary. This marks yet another potential ousting of a high-level official by Trump. It also follows reports that anti-abortion activists met with White House officials and urged more aggressive federal action to restrict access to mifepristone. Makary frustrated anti-abortion Republicans who wanted the FDA to use its authority to effectively ban the medication, which has been safely used by more than 7.5 million people and FDA-approved for over 25 years.
This news further reinforces that anti-abortion extremists are driving the agenda inside the Trump administration. Makary himself launched a politically motivated FDA review of mifepristone at Trump’s direction, based on junk science—yet it still wasn’t enough for these fringe groups. Anti-abortion extremists won’t stop short of a national abortion ban.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“Makary’s sham FDA ‘review’ of mifepristone was not far enough for fringe groups hellbent on a national abortion ban, and it’s not a coincidence this news came after reports of anti-abortion leaders meeting at the White House this morning. Whoever replaces Makary will be just as, if not more, extreme, and will face the same pressures from the anti abortion movement that Trump is moving to hand the keys to the FDA to. We are one Trump appointee away from the federal government baselessly restricting a medication that millions of people rely on.”
