Reproductive Freedom for All Responds to FDA Commissioner Conducting a Full Review of Mifepristone

Washington, DC — Yesterday, in a letter in response to pressure from Sen. Josh Hawley (R-MO), FDA Commissioner Martin Makary has committed to conducting a full review of mifepristone. This review comes despite two decades of scientific evidence that has proven mifepristone’s safety and efficacy. This baseless decision is rooted in disinformation, not science. It is just the latest move in a coordinated attack by anti-abortion extremists to ban mifepristone, which would have devastating consequences for abortion access nationwide.

Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement in response:

“We’ve known this moment was coming, and we’ve been sounding the alarm on Martin Makary since his nomination. After months of signals and dog whistles, it’s now in black and white on official FDA letterhead. This review is not grounded in new data or real safety concerns—it’s driven by Project 2025-aligned groups and right-wing politicians who want to ban abortion nationwide. We are now one step closer to the Trump administration’s ultimate goal of a national abortion ban.”
