Reproductive Freedom for All Responds to Ken Paxton Winning Texas Senate Primary
Washington, DC — Yesterday, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton won the Republican nomination for U.S. Senate, defeating incumbent Sen. John Cornyn in the Texas Republican primary runoff. Paxton will face Democrat James Talarico in the general election.
As Texas attorney general, Paxton is one of the most extreme and aggressive anti-abortion politicians in the country. He gladly enforces Texas’s extreme abortion ban, fought federal efforts to ensure patients can access emergency abortion care, and uses his office to target providers in other states for providing legal medication abortion care.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“Ken Paxton has built his career on controlling people’s lives, bodies, and futures. As Texas attorney general, he has enforced one of the cruelest abortion bans in the country, fought to block emergency abortion care, and tried to punish providers for helping patients access legal care. Now, he wants to bring that same extremism to the U.S. Senate. Texans deserve leaders who will protect their freedom—not politicians like Paxton who will stop at nothing to ban abortion and put people’s health and lives at risk.”
Paxton’s victory, helped by Trump’s endorsement, comes as the anti-abortion movement continues escalating attacks on abortion access nationwide—from trying to block and restrict medication abortion to targeting providers and patients across state lines. Kristi Hamrick of Students for Life of America recently told Politico, “Our patience has run out…The pro-life movement, like many other parts of the [Republican] coalition, made an investment in Donald Trump. We want a return on that investment.” As the country approaches the fourth anniversary of the Dobbs decision and the 2026 midterm elections, abortion remains a defining issue for voters who are seeing exactly how dangerous and far-reaching these bans are.
