Reproductive Freedom for All Responds to Senate GOP Again Blocking Democrats’ Efforts to Protect IVF
Washington, DC — Today, for the second time this year, Republicans in the U.S. Senate blocked an effort from Senate Democrats—led by Senators Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), Cory Booker (D-NJ) and Patty Murray (D-WA)—to federally protect and expand coverage for in vitro fertilization (IVF) and other fertility treatments. This is the second time this year that the GOP has blocked a vote to enshrine IVF protections—making clear that they pose an urgent threat to Americans’ freedom to start or grow a family on their own terms.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement in response:
“This is a blatant slap in the face to people across this country trying to access IVF and fertility treatments so they can start or grow their families. No matter how they try to spin it, Republicans’ extremist agenda has and will always seek to roll back fundamental freedoms—from abortion to IVF to birth control to Plan B. Voters won’t stand for this extremism, and you can count on them holding Republicans accountable at the ballot box this November.”
In February, following the extreme Alabama Supreme Court ruling that threatened IVF and caused several local medical facilities in Alabama to suspend their in vitro fertilization treatments, Democrats attempted to pass legislation that would create federal protections for IVF, but it was blocked by the anti-abortion Republicans in Congress. Today marks the second attempt by Democrats to pass legislation to provide protections for IVF and fertility treatments for all Americans.
