Reproductive Freedom for All Responds to the Withdrawal of Dave Weldon’s Nomination
Washington, DC — Dave Weldon’s nomination for Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) was officially withdrawn. Throughout his career in Congress, Weldon consistently cast anti-abortion and anti-reproductive freedom votes. Notably, he authored the Weldon Amendment, an anti-abortion appropriations rider that has allowed discrimination against patients who need abortion care.
Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:
“Dave Weldon has been trying to restrict abortion access and reproductive freedom for over a decade. We’re relieved that this anti-abortion extremist will not have the power to make health care decisions for millions of Americans.”
The CDC Director plays a critical role in public health policy and practice. The CDC Director would have the power to mandate that states collect and report detailed data on their patients, including those who travel from other states. They could also decide to fund anti-abortion pseudoscience in order to attack reproductive freedom.
