Reproductive Freedom for All Slams Senate Confirmation of Anti-Abortion Extremist Todd Blanche as Trump’s Attorney General

Washington, DC — Today, the Senate confirmed Todd Blanche as Trump’s Attorney General, delivering another far-right opponent of reproductive freedom into the Cabinet. This comes on the heels of alarming audio that leaked this week, where Blanche assured a private group of extremists that he would make the Dobbs decision “permanent in every single state.” He has also pledged to go after the delivery of medication abortion and investigate the revival of the Comstock Act, which could serve as a backdoor abortion ban.

As AG, Blanche will have enormous power over reproductive freedom. He will control how the Department of Justice (DOJ) enforces federal laws that shape civil and reproductive rights—including the department’s potential misinterpretation of the Comstock Act, access to medication and abortion care, whether abortion restrictions are challenged, and the enforcement of federal emergency abortion care protections.

Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:

“Senate Republicans have handed the country’s top law enforcement position to a Trump loyalist who will put the president’s political interests ahead of the people he is sworn to serve. Todd Blanche now has enormous power to implement an extreme anti-reproductive freedom agenda from every angle—targeting medication abortion, abandoning patients, and criminalizing providers. Senators who voted to confirm Blanche have abandoned their duty to fight for our rights and freedoms—this vote will haunt them this November.”

Blanche has made clear he’ll weaponize the Department of Justice to do the bidding of the Trump administration and anti-abortion groups. As Acting AG, Blanche helped gut enforcement of the FACE Act—the federal law protecting patients and providers from threats, intimidation, violence, and obstruction at reproductive health clinics. His DOJ fired the career prosecutors who enforced clinic protections and released a sham report attacking their work. Just last month, the DOJ, under Blanche’s leadership, cut a 7-figure taxpayer-funded settlement to a convicted FACE Act violator.
