Reproductive Freedom for All Slams Trump Administration’s Plans to Gut Workplace Protections for Pregnancy and Reproductive Healthcare

Washington, DC — Reproductive Freedom for All condemned the Trump administration’s reported plans to weaken workplace protections for workers who need accommodations for pregnancy-related and reproductive care, revealed on the eve of the election. According to reporting, the changes would gut protections put in place under the Pregnant Workers Fairness Act and empower employers to potentially deny accommodations for reproductive healthcare to their employees. The changes would take effect after the midterms, in a blatant move to dodge accountability from voters on unpopular policies.

Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju released the following statement:

“It’s unconscionable to force workers to choose between the care they need and keeping their job, which is why the Trump administration is waiting until after the election to roll this out. Today’s elections are a crucial opportunity to establish checks on a corrupt administration that continues to leave pregnant workers and working families behind.”

The Trump administration has taken repeated action to undermine women’s health, and promised “the gloves will be off” on anti-abortion actions once the midterms are over. The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) could publish the proposal as soon as this month. Under the current rule, employers must accommodate workers’ time off for abortion care, including travel. The EEOC could strip abortion, fertility treatment, and other conditions from the list of protected accommodations and widen religious exemptions that let employers refuse accommodations altogether.

The Pregnant Workers Fairness Act, which became law in 2022, marked a historic advancement for reproductive freedom by establishing a federal right to workplace accommodations for pregnant workers. The law requires covered employers to provide reasonable accommodations for workers with limitations related to pregnancy, childbirth, or related medical conditions. Weakening its implementing regulations could leave more workers facing barriers to care and greater financial uncertainty when they need support.
