Mini Timmaraju Joins MS NOW Live from Maine to Discuss Why Susan Collins is Running Scared from Voters on Her Abortion Record

Today, Reproductive Freedom for All President and CEO Mini Timmaraju joined Alicia Menendez on MS NOW’s On the Line to discuss how abortion rights are shaping the final stretch of Maine’s Senate race. Susan Collins is facing voters for the first time since the fall of Roe v. Wade, which Collins laid the foundation for by confirming Brett Kavanaugh to the U.S. Supreme Court. As ads blanket the airwaves and Jackson hammers Collins for her Kavanaugh vote – complemented by Reproductive Freedom for All’s nearly half a million dollar mail program – reproductive freedom is front and center in the closing days of the race.

Mini Timmaraju discussed why abortion is Collins’ top vulnerability and central to Jackson’s closing message to voters:

  • Women voters and abortion rights could shape the race: “Women voters are the most significant bloc of the majority of voters in the state, and then you add that two-thirds of Mainers support abortion rights and want to see solutions to abortion rights. And there’s polling that indicates that Troy Jackson has a 16-point advantage over Susan Collins in terms of trust on the issue of abortion rights.”
  • Collins’ anti-abortion record: “There are so many factors at play here, not the least of which is Susan Collins’ vote on Kavanaugh. We’re reminding voters also that she voted for Samuel Alito, the author of the Dobbs decision, that she’s voted against federal legislation that would codify a right to abortion in all 50 states.”
  • Troy Jackson’s record expanding abortion access in Maine: “Troy Jackson is just such a compelling candidate on this issue, and during his time as state Senate leader, he helped shepherd through really progressive legislation that made abortion rights legal in Maine and expanded access and really made Maine a safe haven state for so many other Americans who needed to come here for care.”
  • The political test facing Susan Collins: “I think this is a test about whether Susan Collins and her unique brand of getting resources to Maine can withstand the attacks on her for being a Trump apologist, a Trump crony, and someone willing to sell out her own core belief — she says she’s pro-choice — for an administration that is determined to roll back abortion rights […] We are making this the marquee race for abortion rights in the country.”

Alicia Menendez also highlighted why abortion is a defining issue for Maine voters heading into Election Day:

  • Collins’ first time facing voters since the Dobbs decision: “[Abortion rights] are still top of mind for lots of Maine voters, where Republican Senator Susan Collins is up for reelection for the first time since the Supreme Court’s Dobbs decision to strike down Roe, forcing Collins to defend her vote to confirm Justice Brett Kavanaugh, the swing vote from the Dobbs decision.”
